- USER FRIENDLY CYBERSPACE
- ========================
- (With acknowledgements to the Daily Telegraph)
-
- MACINTOSH computer users who have not yet ventured on to the information
- superhighway might be tempted by e-World - Apple's new user-friendly link to
- the Internet, which will be available in October 1994.
-
- Dial into the service using a standard modem and you arrive in a colourful
- little toytown, though one with a distinctly American feel to it. There's an
- e-Mail Center, Newsstand,Marketplace, a Business and Finance Plaza, a
- Learning Center, Arts and Leisure Pavilion, a Community Centre and an Info
- Booth. If you have mail in your virtual mailbox, a little red van will be
- parked outside the e-Mail Center.
-
- Apple has brought the "point and click" technology which made it famous to
- the world of on-line communications hoping to attract all those who get
- technophobic shivers every time they hear the word Cyberspace.
-
- E-World is simply the company's own user friendly version of the kind of
- service that compuserve provides already.
-
- Click on the newsstand icon for instance and you open a new window with
- icons representing a Reuters news service and USA today. Click on the
- Business and Finance Plaza and you can get the latest stock market prices.
- You can even enter in your own portfolio and keep an eye on your gains and
- losses. However, only Wall Street prices are available at the moment and
- there is a 15 minute delay on the information.
-
- All the other things that you might expect from such a service are there:
- Games,Shareware,Specialist Discussion Groups,technical support,product
- information, travel info and weather. The Internet connection is restricted to
- e-Mail for the time being, but a full Internet service is planned for next
- year. Charges are in dollars and will vary with exchange rate. At current
- rates it will cost about £5.90 per month subscription plus £5.20 per hour
- for the first two hours and £8.50 for additional hours.
-
- The software will be distributed free with new computer purchasers from next
- month. Existing owners have to subscribe and need to be running System 7 and
- to have 4 meg ram, a modem and of course a phone line.
-
- The service may not attract users already plugged into the Internet through
- other providers but for the novice Macintosh user, it gives a gentle intro
- to the info super-highways.
